AIT - Co-simulation for studying flexible aerodynamics

Three simulation technologies were combined to enable the performance analysis of an aerodynamic wing for the motorsport industry.

Approach & Solution

1. The physical interaction between airflow (CFD), vehicle dynamics (Multibody) and wing flexibility (FEA) is enough to make full co-simulation a must-have technology.

2. A flexible wing model was created by finite element method (NASTRAN) and its modal properties exported.

3. A full vehicle model (ADAMS/Car) was developed which included the flexible wing and non-linear tyre and suspension properties.

4. Interactive co-simulation with a 3D fluid model allowed the forces generated (at the wing and on the car) to be optimised accurately.
