TEM - Test Process Optimisation

Increased Handset Testing Throughput by 100%

Context

A major telecommunication company required to provide end-to-end testing of new terminals and certify them as fit for distribution on their network. A shortfall existed in the processes in both the ability to test sufficient numbers of terminals and the exit quality of the terminals.

Altran was approached to re-engineer the processes to allow the ability to test sufficient number of terminals meeting the exit pre-defined exit quality.

Business Objectives & Challenges

The challenge was to develop the company’s test process to:

  • Improve a handset’s time to market
  • Increase the level of quality in the testing
  • Modernise the test specifications
  • Provide other parts of the organisation with visibility of the test progress

Approach & Solution

Altran performed a maturity audit on the existing processes of the company and made recommendations for improvements in a number of areas including:

  • Clear definition of processes
  • Introduction of controlled aggression into the test cycle
  • Consolidation of tools using Test Director
  • Effective resource management
  • Automated reporting capability

Results & Added Value

A detailed review of all tests performed was completed using Altran’s expertise in handset testing to identify more efficient and effective testing techniques:

  • Scenario based testing solution
  • User focussed
  • Targeting revenue impacting issues
  • Verification of coverage against requirements

Overall, the throughput for handset testing processes doubled i.e. increased by 100%.
